On August 28, 2011 Tropical storm Irene ripped through New England leaving tragedy in its wake. Tropical Storm Irene dumped between 4 and 9 inches of rain onto ground already soaked from a month of off-and-on precipitation. Across the Berkshires, roads washed out and homes flooded. Before the storm, The Spruces was a community of 273 people.
